Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute

Cedars-Sinai's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute is home to a full range of specialty centers that diagnose and treat most forms of cancer. The institute provides more cancer care than any other medical center in the city of Los Angeles and performs more cancer surgeries then any other hospital in Los Angeles County. Additionally, the Cedars-Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for our patients.

Investigators at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute are involved in both basic and clinical research. The more researchers learn about cancer, the more they realize that every type of cancer is different, requiring different diagnostic and treatment approaches.

Research

The rapid translation of research discoveries into safe, effective therapies is a core mission of the institute. Cedars-Sinai researchers are seeking more effective ways to diagnose, treat and prevent many forms of cancer, including brain, breast, ovarian, prostate, lung cancer, thyroid, head & neck as well as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and sarcoma.

The institute supports basic and clinical research in many cancer-related areas, including blood cell development, gene cloning and stem cells. Among the many exciting areas that The Board of Governors Center for Cancer Research at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute is investigating are:

  • Blocking cancer growth by turning off signaling pathways
  • Developing gene therapy tumor treatments
  • Enhancing bone marrow transplantation options

Louis Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center

Louis Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai offers patients the best medical care possible as well as clinical trials and a translational research lab. The center's research activities focus on understanding the biology of prostate cancer and developing new treatments.

For example, The Sumner M. Redstone Cancer Research Program at the Louis Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center is supporting a six-year national prostate cancer study, as well as cancer drug development and clinical trial programs that share the goal of bringing new therapies and treatments to patients who have prostate cancer and other advanced cancers.

Other examples of resources devoted to prostate cancer research include:

  • Louis Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center Genomics Lab
  • The Spielberg Family Center for Applied Proteomics, a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to furthering the development and use of proteomic technologies to guide physicians in patient-management decisions.
  • Clinical Trials, studying the latest and most advanced cancer therapeutics.

Women's Cancer Research Institute

The Women's Cancer Research Institute is a multidisciplinary program working to end cancer—particularly ovarian, breast and cervical cancers and conducts many research projects for women's cancers.

The institute's current research initiatives include developing a blood test for early detection of ovarian cancer, and using micro-satellite probes to pinpoint locations where tumor-suppressing genes undergo changes in certain cancers.

Blood and Marrow Transplant Program

Today, one of the most aggressive procedures used in the battle against cancer is blood and marrow transplantation. This technique seeks to replace cancerous cells with transplanted healthy blood, bone marrow or stem cells. The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Cedars-Sinai is the 3rd largest provider of BMT services in the Los Angeles region. The program has earned wide respect for its multidisciplinary approach to the transplant process as well as its excellent patient care.

Cancer Center of Excellence

The Cedars Sinai Cancer Center of Excellence is dedicated to a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to the diagnoses treatment and research of specific cancer diagnosis. The Centers of Excellence include cancer specialists with particular emphasis and or training in the diagnosis and treatment of particular cancers and include:

  • Thyroid Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Breast Cancer - Saul & Joyce Brandman Breast Center
  • Lung Cancer –Women's Guild Lung Institute
  • Head and Neck Cancer
  • Colorectal Cancer

Education

Many of the cancer centers and programs at Cedars-Sinai offer residency and fellowship programs, including rigorous programs in neuro-oncology, hematology, gynecologic oncology and surgical oncology. The Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute also offers 11 specialized Tumor Boards/ Cancer Conference every month in each of the major cancer specialties to ensure that a multidisciplinary team of experts reviews difficult cases
