Research Focus

Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), endourology, laparoscopic and robotic urologic surgery. Improvement of endoscopic surgical techniques for stone disease, endourology and laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic urology and laparoscopic uro-oncology. Laser induced tissue changes, applications for tissue ablation, stone treatment, strictures, tumor treatment. Alternative ablation techniques for BPH (tissue vaporization, electroresection, laser resection). Identification of parameters governing stone fragmentation and tissue safety for clinical use of high energy shockwaves.

Research Contributions

Member of team of German urologists who developed the indications for Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL). Developed the "Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery" technique for management of complex kidney stones, kidney tumors and management of strictures inside the kidney. Among the first urologists in this country to perform laparoscopic urologic surgery and expand the range of applications.

Current investigations include:

1. Use of Erythropoietin to protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury in the procine model
2. The role of autologous blood temporary amputation technique (ABTAT) in helping stone clearance after retrograde intrarenal surgery
3. Evaluation of post-prostatectomy return to continence
